Growing up in West Orlando, he was drawn to law enforcement after witnessing the devastating impact of addiction on his family. What began as a short-term role with the Orlando Police Department became a career defined by service, integrity, and strong partnerships with the people he served. As Orlando Police Chief, Jerry worked hand-in-hand with the community to reduce crime, unite the city in the aftermath of 9/11, and emphasize youth engagement and community trust—helping drive homicides down nearly 30%, aggravated assaults by 10%, and sex offenses by nearly 6%.
Elected Sheriff of Orange County, Jerry Demings modernized law enforcement by deploying body-worn cameras, upgrading technology, increasing patrol visibility, and making the justice system more fair and efficient—reducing overall crime by 30% and violent crime by 34% while returning more than $10 million to taxpayers. Following the Pulse nightclub tragedy, he led Orange County with compassion, bringing people together to mourn, remember, and heal. Now, as Orange County Mayor, Jerry is focused on lowering costs for Florida families—committing $160 million over 10 years to affordable and workforce housing, investing in transportation and public safety, and strengthening first responder services.
