What is happening to Dr. Lisa D. Cook is not just wrong. It is outrageous.
Dr. Cook is a brilliant economist, a Spelman graduate, a Marshall Scholar, a Ph.D. from Berkeley, a respected professor, and a trusted advisor to presidents. She made history as the first Black woman to serve on the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. Her appointment was legal. Her qualifications are beyond question. And yet, here we are, watching an unconstitutional effort to push her out of the position she rightfully earned.
Let us not pretend this is about anything other than race and power. Dr. Cook is being targeted for the same reason too many Black leaders are attacked when they break barriers and rise to positions of influence. This is part of a pattern, and it is one we know all too well.
This attack is not just on Dr. Cook. It is on every qualified person of color who dares to lead. It is on the independence of our institutions. It is on the fight for equity and justice in this country.
We call on elected officials, legal leaders, and the public to speak out and push back. Dr. Cook deserves better. And so does this country. We stand with her.
