HipHop Hollywood recently completed a powerful project in which they spoke with Black men from various parts of the community to gather their raw reactions to excerpts from Project 2025, sparking deep concern and confusion about its potential impact.
While some had heard of it, many were unfamiliar with the details. Common perceptions included the idea that it aimed to eliminate federal resources and support systems that benefit marginalized groups. These concerns were reinforced by the belief that Project 2025 could potentially harm, rather than help, communities of color by scaling back crucial programs.
Dr. Tyrone Howard, a professor of education at UCLA, highlighted the most troubling aspects of the initiative. Among the proposals was the elimination of the Federal Department of Education, which could disproportionately impact Black students by removing vital resources for disadvantaged schools. The potential rollback of discussions on race and racism in education further raises alarms, as Dr. Howard argued that Black history is an inseparable part of American history. The diminishing of such topics could erase important narratives and harm educational equity.
Many in the community see Project 2025 as not just a policy issue, but a step backward in terms of civil rights and social progress. The proposal to expedite death penalty sentences for those on death row, many of whom are Black men, was another key issue met with disbelief. Coupled with other measures like restricting access to student loan forgiveness and limiting women’s reproductive rights, Project 2025 has sparked concern among voters, pushing many to recognize the high stakes of the 2024 election.
